The Art of Up-cycling
‘Up-cycling’ is defined as the process of turning discarded items into something new and of greater artistic value than the original. Unlike ‘recycling’ which breaks down the material into its raw form, up-cycling is about giving the original a second life or a new function.
Tim started ‘up-cycling’ found objects long before he even knew the word existed. Often to be found rummaging at the bottom of skips, he has the ability not only to spot the potential in other folks’ discarded items, but to actually completely re-imagine that item’s use or purpose. To be able to see, imagine and then reveal the hidden beauty in something which is old, dirty, rusted and unwanted, is a skill indeed.
Previously the in house artist and ‘up-cycler’ at Dr. Footprints in East Sussex, Tim has since continued his passion for rescuing ‘stuff’, and with the boatyard where he lived for several years providing a wealth of rich pickings, his work has since taken on a slightly more industrial and ‘boat-y’ theme.
There is currently no work for sale whilst we focus our efforts on the bigger ‘up-cycling’ challenge of turning our Bedford fire engine in to a house! But below is a gallery of some of Tim’s smaller projects from over the years.
