Upcycled Industrial Floodlight on Surveyor's Tripod
|
TechnicalThe lamp and tripod have an adjustable height and can fold down to around 130cm. It looks good proportionally standing at around 180/190cm. The head lamp measures approximately 39cm at its widest point (top to bottom).
Originally powered by propane, all the gas fittings are now removed and have been replaced with CE marked electrics. The light can be dimmed to a desired level providing a suitable bulb is used. The lamp is made from aluminium, glass and steel. The tripod is wood with aluminium fittings and leather straps. There is also a chain fitted to prevent the legs from slipping on smooth surfaces. |

The BuildThis fantastic British Bullfinch Lamp, dating from the 1950s, would originally have been powered by propane gas and when I originally sourced the lamp it still had the old gas pipes fitted to it. These I removed along with the old gas mantle and, taking the whole thing apart, I stripped off the old paint and cleaned, polished and restored it to its former glory, including the lettering which I painted in traditional enamel. The back, which is made of pressed steel, I simply restored to keep its age rather than re-paint it.

I then fitted it with a new CE marked bulb holder, painted silver to match and, using an old tap handle for a switch, I also fitted a dimmer. I then mounted the lamp on to a restored surveyor's tripod. These two items, sourced separately, I have designed and rebuilt to appear as one piece.
The surveyor's tripod needed extensive repairs to the wood. I also stripped the old paint from the aluminium fittings, then repainted them black and antiqued it back down for a nice finish. I also added a chain to the legs at the bottom to stop the feet from slipping if it needs to stand on a smooth floor.
In short, both the lamp and tripod have both been considerately and considerably restored and would now make a really great addition to home, office, studio etc. Available now for £650.00.
